I grew up in Western MA and moved around a lot in my undergraduate College years, experiencing personal stories and upheavals that are most likely not uncommon for many people. Through navigating tough terrain I've had to engage with concepts that challenged me and pushed me further from my comfort zone. Through self-examination I have arrived not at a final destination, but at a mid-point. This is a place where I need to look no further- a place where I can breathe and rest. This is what my work is really about.

Light Refreshments and Wine Tasting Will Be Offered by AwenTree During Artwalk.

An artist once asked me, “Bruce, what’s your favorite photograph.”

I closed my eyes and imagined my photographs. I answered, “I have favorites, of course, but my most favorite image is always the next photograph.

In this series of images at Awentree I believe a sense of prayer, or astonishment, pervades the photographs and I hope the viewer sees what I see; the wonder, and the awe, the beauty and the extraordinary in the ordinary—the gravestone, the statue, the religious icon.
Often, I ask myself "What am I called to do?" And "How can I make the world a better place."

To paraphrase Rumi; I remind myself: I need to be permanently astonished. The second thing I need is love; draw upon love for vision and energy. And the third thing is sacrifice--give the drop that is myself. To be astonished, to become more like a child, to be nourished by being amazed—and by giving.

Photography is my passion. The pursuit of wow. This is the way I try to live my life. Every where I turn and see I truly am astonished. I celebrate life and the spiritual ties that bind us together and I do this by trying to be always astonished. Simone Weil said: "Absolute attention is prayer."

When I photograph an icon I both draw upon my degree in art history and years working as a documentary photographer and in a profound sense I also forget the past , turn toward the icon in a prayerful manner and I become truly astonished.

Tielhard de Chardin wrote: "Seeing: We might say that the whole of life lies in that verb - if not ultimately, at least essentially."

We design the world by the way we choose to see it. I choose to see beauty and to share that wonder, that astonishment with you.

Of course, my goal is not to change the world all at once, but one person at a time; by reaching out with my eyes wide open--seeing; being astonished; mending the part of he world that is within my reach--to bring light where there is darkness. Peace and Beauty.

“Getting Closer to Flora and Others...Images from Green World”

Over the past year, I have been creating 'scanographs', using my flatbed scanner as my camera and 3-dimensional materials as my subjects, to produce high resolution images from nature. Post-scan, I edit in Photoshop to create detailed compositions that portray essences, often revealing the less-seen. Owing to my interests in ecology, foraging and gardening, I possess an intimate knowledge of 'green world' in the Pioneer Valley. I strive to share that with others through my art, among other ways. Subjects include wild plants/mushrooms and vegetables. Recurring themes include sensuality, balance, change, beauty in things overlooked and playfulness. I will include a few photographs in this exhibit, as well.

I’ve always been interested in the science of light and moving objects.

The universe and it’s movements captured my childhood imagination and the more I learned the more fascinated I became.

I picked up paper and paint and let my imagination fly. Throughout my art education colors and feelings became meaningful. I fell in love with the fauves and impressionist period. For me, their use of color elicited feelings of time and place.

Working in the theater all my life has expanded my palate and offered new opportunities of expressions with dancers and movement. To capture a moving object wasn’t as important as capturing the feeling of movement. The dances of life as it were.

So it is through time, movement and hues that my photoscapes come alive. I try to capture not only the feeling of movement but the emotion and give it to you, the viewer to touch.

Silver Swimmers
Medium:
Performance Art - Street Art
Venue:
Awen Tree
Address:
102 Cottage St
Event:
The Silver Swimmers are an awe-inspiring roving street-type performance ensemble based in Western Massachusetts. These silver dancers saturate space with their enchanting movement reminiscent of an underwater imaginal realm. Dressed in originally designed early 1900's era swimming costumes and bathing hats, completely swathed in silver body paint, they silently swim against the pressure of absent water. These ephemeral figures transform a bustling street into a meditational haven.

Influenced by the study of such techniques as Butoh, Contact Improvisation, Continuum and the sciences of the Environment, these performers bring an artistry to their movement that is enchanting and intelligent.

The ensemble exposes a crossover in dimensions- the swimmers live in a land in which the qualities of air and water are reversed. They have broken through the fabric of reality to arrive in our world. Unaware of this fact, the swimmers cannot see the mesmerised crowds. Completely accidentally, they sometimes catch the passers-by in their bubbles.

Medium:
Music Performance - Blues
Venue:
Luthiers Co op
Address:
108 Cottage St
Event:
MARK NOMAD'S music has been heard on radio stations all over the world and has been used in commercials and in film. Nomad's blues have been tempered by years of living and experience - expressed by the plaintive cry of a bottleneck on acoustic guitar or the driving rhythm of an electric band.

Nomad has been acclaimed as a master slide guitarist, a singer-songwriter and a bandleader. Whether performing solo or with his band, Nomad passionately takes the listener on a journey to where the blues have been and where they're going.

Saturdays we will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at night, our only late night hours. We usually will sponsor some type of music. For example, on September 8, we will have New England's own Mark Nomad, reknowned blues guitarist with his new cd in tow, 'Acoustic Land'. He'll have his cd's with him if you want to pick up a copy. He will be playing in the shop from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

For our own part, every second Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. we will give free verbal appraisals on vintage instruments, so if you have anything in the attic or cellar, from fretted instruments to violins, we will be happy to give you price quotes. Those who have frequented our repair shop, know it takes a week to get a set-up back, acoustic or electric. With an appointment on that second Saturday we will offer same day set-ups. Either while you wait or drop off and pick up later. Such a deal! Take advantage of it because it only happens once a month and our workshop is usually extremely busy.

Additionally, for 2008, the Cultural Council is specifically requesting applications on the theme described below, and encourages collaborations across the many individuals and organizations working within the community.

Easthampton Intersections: Farmlands & Factories

A remarkable number of opportunities exist in Easthampton due to its distinctive past as both an agricultural center and an industrial town. While the uses of these spaces have evolved over the years, Easthampton possesses singular access to 'rural' and 'labor' traditions. Through utilizing local farms, conservation land, working and converted industrial buildings, citizens of Easthampton have an insight into many facets of New England history that can be explored through the arts and other cultural events.

The postmark deadline for grant applications is October 15, 2007. For further information, visit http://www.massculturalcouncil.org or email eculturalcouncil@aol.com
