I give in with the knowledge that when the time comes to let that eagle in me fly free, these images will remain as silence witnesses of my existence."

Artist: Hannah Richards |
Medium: Painting |
|
Venue:
Metacomet Stage |
Address: 43 Main St |
Event: Hannah Richards received her B.A. in Studio Art: Printmaking from Smith College, where she also completed a Kahn Institute Post-baccalaureate fellowship; an interdisciplinary exploration of Form and Function.
These prints are carborundum collagraphs, an intaglio printmaking technique that involves building up the surface of a metal plate, rather than incising it, to produce an image. This process results in a deep embossing of the paper's surface, printed on an Intaglio press. Because of the delicacy of the plates, this method yields a monoprint, rather than an edition, as many intaglio methods produce.
These prints explore the visual texture and abstract beauty of microscopic forms and organic materials, emphasizing the relationships between forms in nature, which seem to echo at all levels of scale. This body of work deals with the fluidity and interface between two- and three-dimensional textures, as evident in the surface of these prints.
Hannah also works as a birth doula, and finds that each of these two fields often enrich her experience of the other. She lives in Northampton with her husband, Max and daughter, Sina.

Artist: Jeff Vella |
Medium: Drawing - Caricature |
|
Venue:
Marketplace at Eastworks |
Address: 116 Pleasant St |
Event: Like most artists, I knew at a very young age, I wanted to draw comics for a living. At age 6, I would amuse my family & friends by holding a crayon box up to my eyes, (pretending it was a camera), I'd say 'click' then I'd duck down behind the sofa and draw their caricatures as fast as I can, and charged .10 cents for each one. I made $1.80 that summer. I knew then, I wanted to be a professional cartoonist.
Long story short - I currently work for a Connecticut newspaper drawing Editorial Cartoons. I also do some freelance Illustration, and an occasional gig drawing caricatures. I grew up and currently live in Enfield, CT..... Well...., that's not completely true - I just got older in Enfield, but I never grew up.
During the Ark Walk event, I will be displaying my caricature artwork as well as drawing live caricatures. |

Artist: Jene Youtt |
Medium: Photography - Motion |
|
Venue:
Mary Ann's Dance and More |
Address: 56 Cottage St |
Event: I've always been interested in the science of light and moving objects. The universe and it's movements captured my childhood imagination and the more I learned the more fascinated I became. I picked up paper and paint and let my imagination fly. Throughout my art education colors and feelings became meaningful. I fell in love with the fauves and impressionist period. For me, their use of color elicited feelings of time and place. Working in the theater all my life has expanded my palate and offered new opportunities of expressions with dancers and movement. To capture a moving object wasn't as important as capturing the feeling of movement. The dances of life as it were. So it is through time, movement and hues that my photoscapes come alive. I try to capture not only the feeling of movement but the emotion and give it to you, the viewer to touch. -- Jene Youtt |

Event: In 2002 I was diagnosed with MS. At first only scribbles filled with pain and fear emerged--until miraculously watercolor flowers began to flow. By expressing my feelings through pictures and words, I was able to soothe and comfort myself. As I continued to express myself through art and language, I felt more and more inspired and alive--making it possible to deal with the pain I was feeling inside my body. Through my then untrained hands, I felt freedom. I believe that anyone is capable of expressing him or herself through art therapy. No art training is necessary, although eventually, I was inspired to take formal art lessons. I will be exhibiting my work at Country Accents by NJB in the Marketplace. |

Medium: Painting |

Venue:
Marcia Reed Studio |
Address: 1 Railroad St |
Event: Please drop by my open studio in the Old Railroad Station to see completed pieces and works-in-progress.
It is important that my landscapes in oils and watercolors convey a sense of place. Nature is my influence but then it becomes something more. I don't want my work to capture the exactness of nature or my brush marks to be predictable. I have been told for years that I have an unnatural landscape palette. Color is important to me, but I also am intrigued by the absence of color as in my nocturnal moonscapes. I want to embrace a mood for the piece, and challenge the viewer to look deeper. In the process of painting on location or in my studio I strive for the balance of when to intervene and when to leave well enough alone.
Every day I am thankful for having adventures around the world that allow me to experience and convey that sense of place. I have taught workshops in Tuscany, Italy, Burgundy, France, and in the US Virgin Islands. I have met many fascinating people of all ages, including artists who have enhanced my life and work with their personal stories. I invite you to observe my watercolors and oils with their open vistas, storm swept skies, full mysterious moons, and contemplative moods. It is my hope that you will experience the world I envision through the fusion of paint and experience. |
