Past Art Walk November 10, 2007
Artist: Kate Fontaine |
Medium: Painting - Acrylic |
|
Venue:
Mt.Tom's Homemade Ice Cream |
Address: 34 Cottage St |

Artist: Marcia Reed |
Medium: Painting - Mixed Mediums |
|
Venue:
Valley Art Supplies |
Address: 76 Cottage St |
Event: In my earliest recollections I have always wanted to paint. I saw myself as a painter foremost to anything else. This sounds so clichè. I have read other artists statements and many say the same thing. As I reached a landmark birthday in 2005, I realized my aspirations are still the same as they were when I was young. My painting has lead me into many directions, and journeys, and it has enriched my life.
The challenge I find in my own landscape painting is learning to see and interpret my own feelings and profound appreciation for nature. I constantly struggle to transcend the material and go beyond the painted surface image.
It is important that my landscapes in oils and watercolors convey a sense of place. Nature is my influence but then it becomes something more. I don't want my work to capture the exactness of nature or my brush marks to be predictable. I have been told for years that I have an unnatural landscape palette. Color is important to me, but I also am intrigued by the absence of color as in my nocturnal moonscapes. I want to embrace a mood for the piece, and challenge the viewer to look deeper. In the process of painting on location or in my studio I strive for the balance of when to intervene and when to leave well enough alone.

Artist: Aric Bieganek |
Medium: Music Performance |
|
Venue:
Back on the Rack |
Address: 121 Main St. |
Event: Born and raised in Central Minnesota, Aric Bieganek grew up infused
with the belief that music can both tell stories and inspire personal
and social change. His perspective and his songs -– from the
introspectively placid to the passionately outspoken -– all embody
this belief, just as they have since he was a little boy playing his
first plastic guitar. Although Aric has traveled as far east as Japan,
as far north as Iceland, and across the United States in his trusty
Ford, his connection to his roots is evident in all the poetry and
fervor of his songwriting. |

Artist: Jennifer Gutterman Almeida |
Medium: Photography |
|
Venue:
Marketplace at Eastworks |
Address: 116 Pleasant St |
Event: These works represent the past three years of taking as many pictures as possible when the opportunities arose. As an artist I have expressed my inner eye in a variety of media - Oils, Watercolors, Ink, Pencil, clay, animation, 3D modeling, wood, graphic design, etc.
Many of these photos were taken with the intention of using them as photo references for large scale Oil paintings. The evolved into so much more and became expression in their own right. Then the reference photos became snapshots of interesting things - then a compulsion to capture the dynamic and the interesting.
Color and black & white, all digital images and all digitally processed and printed. From Key West to Mystic, CT, from New Orleans to New York City, from Hadley to Ft. Myers, these photos are only this step in the journey that is always evolving. And that is why I enjoyed it so much. |

|
Venue:
Marketplace at Eastworks |
Address: 116 Pleasant St |
Event: 'I reflect with my art the colors of a universe in constant motion'
Viviana Puello grew up on the Caribbean Coast of Colombia and studied amongst the bohemian community of her small seaside village. When the political situation became intolerable, she immigrated to New York City, where she could paint, uninhibited from the social and political stigmas of traditional society. Puello's large abstract oil paintings are full of life with vibrant colors influenced by her passionate Latin background.
Viviana Puello states, "I'm living my dream and it is real. Those who saw me growing up and know my passion for art now see me with different eyes. I leave a piece of my soul in every painting. A thirsty soul always looking for answers. A dreamer who wants to change the world."
Puello has been actively exhibiting in New York City, Quebec and Saratoga Springs and was a blue ribbon recipient at the 2006 Saratoga Art's Center. |

Artist: Randall Bessette |
Medium: Painting |
|
Venue:
Marketplace at Eastworks |
Address: 116 Pleasant St |
Event: In my Quantiference work, I use an emotion that I cannot understand or handle, and using a visual language of pseudo-math and symbols, create something beautiful that can perhaps give me insight into the original feeling. I do not expect people to look at my work and understand what I am feeling. I rely on my artistic skills to create something that is visually appealing and compelling to the point where understanding the meaning is secondary. The art becomes an independent object of the emotions behind it.
My pleasure in creating these pieces comes from working with that tension between maintaining the imagery and creating a work that is pleasing or exciting to anyone who sees it.

Intimate Immensities -- paintings by Marlene Rye, and musical performance by Brandee Simone
Travel in your mind back to a time as a child when you were in the 'wilderness': backyard, vacant lot, roadside, field, or forest. Remember how the world looked as you crawled through the grass, each individual blade becoming a towering tree, rocks transformed into mountains. Visualize looking through the brambles and thickets of your backyard and feeling the enormity of that space juxtaposed with the closeness of the surrounding branches. See a field, feel the openness of the air and the closeness of the warm ground beneath, expanding and contracting the space at the same time. These sensations are at the heart of my work.
Painting shown: Forest Coronation, 54' x 50', oil on canvas 2005
Brandee Simone will be playing between 5 and 8 p.m. and will have her new CD available for sale as well! |

Artist: Michael MacTavish |
Medium: Painting |
|
Venue:
Manhan Cafe |
Address: 88 Cottage St. |
Event: Michael MacTavish is a Contemporary Impressionist painter with a love for bold color and energetic knife and brush strokes. Realism is the map into MacTavish's painting, a voyage of abstract delights and lively surface textures.
Michael paints enthusiastically from the heart, completing each work while the paint is still wet, a method known as "alla prima."
"I love to paint outside. The changing weather and light encourages a spontaneous and fresh approach to the work. Observing nature directly builds a deep understanding of the visual world."
"I also love to paint in the studio. Often I will develop a painting done outdoors into a larger work done in the studio. I'll scan paintings completed outdoors and photographs into my computer, make adjustments and paint from the monitor. I can change the values, colors and shapes to be more like how I remember them, or how I wish them to be."
"Doug's (Manhan Cafe) coffee has had a significant influence in the energy found in some of my paintings. If I didn't have a cup of his coffee in one hand, I would most likely paint with both hands."
Painting full time in New England (spring, summer & fall) and the Southwest (winter), Michael shares a home and studio in both areas with his wife, Denise. You can find print reproductions of some of MacTavish's paintings at the Manhan Cafe from November 1st to the 28th. |

Artist: Hannah Richards |
Medium: Painting |
|
Venue:
Metacomet Stage |
Address: 43 Main St |
Event: Hannah Richards received her B.A. in Studio Art: Printmaking from Smith College, where she also completed a Kahn Institute Post-baccalaureate fellowship; an interdisciplinary exploration of Form and Function. These prints are carborundum collagraphs, an intaglio printmaking technique that involves building up the surface of a metal plate, rather than incising it, to produce an image. This process results in a deep embossing of the paper's surface, printed on an Intaglio press. Because of the delicacy of the plates, this method yields a monoprint, rather than an edition, as many intaglio methods produce. These prints explore the visual texture and abstract beauty of microscopic forms and organic materials, emphasizing the relationships between forms in nature, which seem to echo at all levels of scale. This body of work deals with the fluidity and interface between two- and three-dimensional textures, as evident in the surface of these prints. Hannah also works as a birth doula, and finds that each of these two fields often enrich her experience of the other. She lives in Northampton with her husband, Max and daughter, Sina. |

Since 2001 he has been living in Brookline, Massachusetts with his wife Helen and daughter Nina. Juergen has been participated in many local events and shows. His work has been published in books and magazines. Juergen finds inspiration at the nearby Wildlife Sanctuary Hall's Pond, as well as, in the beautiful landscapes of New Englands' National Parks and Forests.
Juergen has always regarded nature as the ultimate inspiration.
Please drop into The Pirate's Den to enjoy his stunning landscape showcased within. Look for the Yellow Gate on Cottage Street! |

Artist: Zhem Behr |
Medium: Painting - Mixed Mediums |
|
Venue:
Marketplace at Eastworks |
Address: 116 Pleasant St |
Event: 'Zhem's artwork is primarily land and water scapes, taken from the New
England countryside and coastline. I would consider Zhem a nature
artist. Some of his most inspiring works are of the coast of Maine,
images based in three media, in realistic colour, startling outlines,
and framed into wood he cut and hewed by hand, keeping in mind
conservation and sustainable forestry practices. Zhem works in pen and
ink with coloured pencil overlay; papercuttings; and pastel. He takes
a photograph or direct image and presents it using the three different
media. Zhem also has collected native northern red cedar to make
frames for his artworks, further demonstrating his committment to
preserving nature and the environments he draws from. Zhem is a unique
artist who works with nature in all it's beauty.'

Artist: Katie Richardson |
Medium: Sculpture - Glass |
|
Venue:
Marketplace at Eastworks |
Address: 116 Pleasant St |
Event: I enjoy the process of making, and I revel in the intersections of art and everyday life. My inspiration is drawn from bodies and organic forms, as well as peoples stories and struggles, though often a material is more than enough inspiration in itself. I work primarily in flameworked glass and welded metal, creating sculpture, as well as unique glass beads, jewelry, marbles, and ornaments, and even silk painted scarves. My larger installation works focus around ideas of immigration, identity, nation and home. |

Artist: Beth Kaplowitt |
Medium: Photography |
|
Venue:
Marketplace at Eastworks |
Address: 116 Pleasant St |
Event: I've just returned to Western Massachusetts after spending three years living on the Big Island of Hawai'i. The island offers vast barren fields of black lava and dripping tropical rainforests, fiery molten lava flows and rolling green hills, majestic snow-capped mountains and sandy beaches. Huge hapu'u ferns share space in the green jungle with twisted ohia trees, while endangered green sea turtles rest on white or black sand beaches. My photographs try to capture the amazing contrasts of this stunningly beautiful place in the world, often from unusual perspectives. |
