With the use of digital cameras youth are prompted to represent their views of the city of Easthampton including such things as “youth safe spaces” in the city and what they consider the “most important building” in their neighborhood. The goal of this project is to offer youth a stage to express their individual views and empower them to be positively involved in their community. Look beneath the surface of the mixed-media monoprint exhibit, Beneath the Surface, and local artist/curator Terry Rooney will describe a “visitation” during a meditation retreat with her husband. She explains, “While rowing on a clear mountain lake, we were graced with a visit by a huge snapper turtle crossing our path. This encounter lifted my spirits after a period of darkness in my life. It took ten years before that turtle appeared in my artwork, but these images bring peace, grace and light into my life and work.” Rooney’s work in this exhibit, depicting that turtle swimming beneath the wake of a row boat, brings to mind the Beatles song, “Let It Be”: “In my hour of darkness, she is standing right in front of me, speaking words of wisdom, let it be.”
