|
Venue:
Pioneer Valley Ballet |
Address: 116 Pleasant St, Eastworks Bldg, Suite 155 |
Event: The Dam Art Show is a tribute to the nearly 130-year old Upper Roberts Meadow Reservoir and Dam, which is under threat of being removed. This exhibition is a collection of historic photographs from Forbes Library and new work from local artists and photographers including Adam Cohen, Courtney Fappiano, Seth Gregory and Bill Rowley, interactive 'games', constructions and an installation by sculptor Dee Boyle-Clapp, and an installation of historic items by John Clapp. The art celebrates: the wildlife that has reclaimed the area, which has been identified by the State as a Core Habitat for seven state-listed species; the history of the area; and the incredible beauty that this dam and reservoir create.
The public is invited to bring natural or colored string, kite string, thin rope, or twine under 8 feet long, and tie it onto the installation in a show of support for repairing the dam, retaining the wildlife that have reclaimed the area, and for tapping this dam as a source of clean, green power. |

Her songs -- populated by foxes and owls, wild winds and wide-open skies, unlikely adventurers and world-worn characters -- celebrate a life lived close to the land, the seasons, and the inner workings of the heart. Her rich, clear voice is her primary instrument, often drawing comparisons to Joan Baez and Kate Wolf. To this she adds her simple, sensitive guitar work, as well as fiddle tunes and airs on the violin and viola. Claire’s heartfelt performances offer a chance to slow down, heal, and re-connect with the things that genuinely nourish us. |

Event: The Edges of Yellowstone
A Photographic Exhibit by Danielle Federa
“Edge” is the term given to the boundaries between ecosystems: Where field meets forest; ocean meets river; and plains meet mountain. Diversity thrives at the Edge due to the existence of multiple micro ecosystems. Certain places are defined by edges; Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming is one of these. It is the Edge to which I am attracted as photographer. Looking at texture, light, shape, and pattern, I use the diversity within these intersections—these edges—to explore our world and share glimpses of unseen beauty.

Event: Artist’s Statement
I think in terms of psychology in my work. I really hope to ask questions like, “what kind of idea is this that we’re seeing here,” in other words, where, in our thought processes does this occur? Because it’s not raw experience, nor is it fully processed, ordinary, believable, coherent experience… It’s mediated, but only halfway… it’s some kind of warped middle stage of processing, where things aren’t all put together yet. All the elements are very familiar, but there’s something very wrong about them as they appear in my paintings…
Another area of interest for me, also psychological, is the process of forming, or finding narrative. I think it’s kind of a benign relative of paranoia, because it involves filling in blanks, making questionable connections, adding or omitting information, all for the sake of assembling a story. And I don’t only mean an admittedly fictitious one, I mean the day-to-day lives of ordinary people. In some ways this story-making process is quite necessary, for the sake of efficiency, but in other ways it can be dangerous…
In talking about my work, I also have to talk about humor, absurdity… but what can I say? You can’t explain jokes, specifically, or on general – that’s part of why I want to use them though – there’s something unknowable there, and confronted with it, all you can do is … laugh. Humor operates with a very delicate balance of discomfort: if you raise the level, it’s clearly not funny anymore. It can actually be like a vaccine of sorts: you’re given a weak form of something bad, so you can defeat it – in other words laugh at it. I hope to confuse this balance a little bit though, move just slightly past the safely-humorous…
