My passion for nature has guided me through my path as an artist. The endangered aspect of our rural and open spaces lends an urgency to my work. For this reason I have chosen to live and work in Western Massachusetts. Here there are still places that I can find solitude to paint. These mountains, farms, rivers, woods, and lakes have been my classroom and studio for the past 22 years. Sadly, many of the farms I have painted have been destroyed by "development." By painting these places, I feel I have somehow memorialized them.

'My work addresses the meeting of the spiritual and physical aspects of life's experiences, translating the patterns and tone of spiritual and emotional energy in different situations into a visual language. Not wanting to repeat the heavily abstracted and stylized symbols used in traditional religious art, I provide a more direct, visceral depiction of energy patterns pertaining to particular states.'

Artist:
Alex Kahler
Medium:
Photography - Color
Venue:
The Cellar Bar
Address:
95 Main St.
Event:
In this series, Memento, I explored the idea of the faded memory. I began with photographs from my time in Scotland, projecting them through a tank of water onto a silkscreen. Although a physical process, this resonated with the idea of looking back at old familiar places through the veil of emotion and introspection—suddenly, the scenes we knew like the back of our hand take on a different shape, blur into colors and splashes of memory. What was once a familiar structure loses shape and takes on an even stronger meaning, because, in truth, all memories fade. In the end, all we have is the timbre of an image, the vibration that tells us, yes, this is the color of home.

Alex Kahler is a recent graduate of Bennington College. He has traveled the world, both on his own and with various circus groups, and landed in western Mass in the fall of '10. He currently works as assistant to authors Holly Black and Cassandra Clare, and is working on publishing his newest novel.

Artist:
Albert Woodruff
Medium:
Photography
Venue:
White Square
Address:
86 Cottage Street
Event:
Al Woodruff (aka “Addison”) of Westfield has built a successful second career in pictorial photography. He utilizes skills from the late 19th century when US/UK photographers (including Steichen) were striving to promote photography as an art form. The work of these “pictorialists” emphasized 'atmosphere' by manipulating the final print to create a painterly effect.

When photography gained respect as an independent art form in the early 1900's, photographers turned toward 'purity' and away from pictorialism. There is no doubt, however, that a well-manipulated photograph can be singularly beautiful and send a subtle message.
